As a parent in 2016, it seems I can’t read anything parenting related that doesn’t mention the acronym STEM. But hey, STEM isn’t just the newest educational or parenting buzz word, it encompasses a lot of different areas that are important for development.
So, what’s the big deal and what does STEM even stand for?
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. These four specific areas are important because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how children learn most effectively. Not to mention, STEM-related jobs are on the rise and there are fewer and fewer people skilled to take them on. Early introduction of STEM not only helps our littles learn, but it’s going to help them make a living while also contributing to critical advancements in all four categories.
STEM can be exciting when introduced with the right toys. Here at Green Piñata, we’ve partnered with some amazing brands like HABA, who has incorporated STEM into their toys right from their very first set of blocks back in the 1930s!
It’s never too early to introduce STEM to your child – from stacking blocks and knocking them down to building structures and creating complicated marble runs. Open-ended toys that allow children to construct, manipulate, engineer, explore and experiment with have proven to be some of the best toys because they help children learn important life skills simultaneously as they play.
If you’re looking for more toys to enhance STEM skills, check out some of our favorites like the Patience Blocks (for ages 12-18 months), the Zoolino Building Blocks (also for ages 12-18 months), the On the Farm Stacking Cubes (for 18-24 months) and the Rainbow Pegging Game (for ages 2-3 years).
